Iran says claims it is linked to Jordan drone attack, deaths of US soldiers are 'baseless'
Iran is claiming that accusations of its involvement in an attack that left three U.S. service members dead in Jordan over the weekend are "baseless." Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanaani also claimed that "resistance groups" in the region do not take orders from Iran, according to Reuters. The remarks come after three American service members were killed and other were wounded in a drone attack near the Syrian border over the weekend. "While we are still gathering the facts of this attack, we know it was carried out by radical Iran-backed militant groups operating in Syria and Iraq," President Biden said in response to the strike. Some Republicans have pressed Biden to authorize stronger action against Iran, with members of both parties concerned about the safety of U.S. troops overseas.

Iran denies involvement in drone attack that killed 3 US soldiers in Jordan
Iran has denied involvement in a drone attack in Jordan that killed three US military personnel and injured dozens of others, state media has reported. US President Joe Biden and UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron have blamed Iran-backed groups for Sunday's attack near the border with Syria. "As we have clearly stated before, the resistance groups in the region are responding [to] the war crimes and genocide of the child-killing Zionist regime and… they do not take orders from the Islamic Republic of Iran," Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman Nasser Kanaani was quoted saying by IRNA on Monday. "These groups decide and act based on their own principles and priorities as well as the interests of their country and people." Kanaani said claims of Iranian involvement were motivated by "specific political goals to reverse the realities of the region" and were "influenced by third parties, including the child-killing Zionist regime".

US says 22 soldiers injured in Syria helicopter accident
The United States military said a helicopter accident in northeast Syria has left 22 US service members injured, though no enemy fire was reported at the time of the "mishap". "The service members are receiving treatment for their injuries and 10 have been evacuated to higher care facilities outside of the CENTCOM AOR [US Central Command Area of Responsibility]", the US military said in a statement on Monday. An investigation is under way to determine the cause of the accident on Sunday in northeast Syria, US Central Command said in a statement. The statement added that "no enemy fire was reported" at the time of the accident. US forces operating in Syria since 2015 have come under sporadic attacks from ISIL (ISIS) fighters and Iranian-backed groups operating in the country.

Justice denied for the victims of Afghanistan's Mai Lai massacre
"Surprise: Top US soldier clears US soldiers of murder" That should have been the headline attached to any story written about the "findings" of a recent "probe" into the massacre of an Afghan family, including seven children, obliterated by a US "Hellfire" missile in late August. Of course, not one editor – as far as I can gather – opted to tell that simple, blunt truth. Instead, most trotted out the usual pallet of euphemisms in effect to absolve US soldiers of the murders of an Afghan humanitarian worker, Zemari Ahmadi, three of his children, Zamir, 20, Faisal, 16, and Farzad, 13, as well as his cousin, Ahmad, 30, and three of Ahmadi's nephews, Arwin, seven, Benyamin, six, and Hayat, two and two three-year-old girls, Malika and Somaya. So, editors wrote lots of headlines like this one to summarise the predictable "conclusions" of a report authored by US Air Force Lieutenant General Sami Said: "Watchdog Finds No Misconduct in Mistaken Afghan Airstrike." The Pentagon could not have penned a more agreeable precis of Lieutenant General Said's "investigation" into the summary execution of Ahmadi and his family.

US soldiers set to get pocket sized surveillance drones
Drone-maker AeroVironment Inc unveiled a small four-rotor surveillance helicopter on Tuesday that can be carried in a small pouch and launched from the palm of a hand. The smaller size and simplicity of operation means it can used by ordinary soldiers, offering squads and other small military units the kind of surveillance capacity previously reserved for larger military units, where drones are operated by specialists. AeroVironment said it delivered 20 of the 5-ounce (140-gram) Snipe unmanned aircraft to its first U.S. government client in April. The company declined to identify the government agency that purchased the drones, but Aviation Week reported last year that AeroVironment was developing prototypes for the U.S. Army. AeroVironment said the drone benefited from advances in technology achieved in the development of its Nano Hummingbird drone for DARPA, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, which has been responsible for many technological and scientific breakthroughs used by the military.
